OTTAWA SHRINE CLUB HISTORY On March 30th, 1928 fifteen Nobles met at the Masonic Temple, 111 Metcalfe Street, Ottawa Ontario for the purpose of considering the formation of a Shrine Club. Of the fifteen Nobles present, four were elected to the Executive of the proposed Club, pro-tem. Subsequently the Ottawa Shrine Club was duly and regularly formed under the jurisdiction of Rameses Temple No.33, Toronto, Ontario. On July 3rd, 1975, at the behest of the Officers and Members of the Ottawa Shrine Club, Tunis Temple was duly chartered. Ottawa Shrine Club was then transferred to the jurisdiction of Tunis Temple No.179, together with some $350,000.00 from the Club's treasury. From that point to this date, the Club has operated, with success and distinction, owing allegiance to and with permission of Tunis Shriners A.A.O.N.M.S. No. 179. Culture The culture of the Club is one that lends itself to the marshalling of the talents and dedication of its members in support the various activities of Tunis Shriners. The Club provides an important personal contact with many Nobles and a forum of interest for those who regularly participate in our programs. In an informal way this culture stimulates friendly competition and camaraderie among members and among other Clubs and Units, which ultimately work to the benefit of Tunis Temple. Candidate Activity The members of the Club are certainly aware of the need for renewed efforts to gain new recruits. As members of various Masonic organizations, they are constantly alert to membership opportunities. The Club does not, under its own auspices deal with Temple membership, that is the responsibility of the Temple. We do of course, as individuals, seek out new members for the Shrine, with the expectation that they will also become members of the Ottawa Shrine Club. In fact we presently know of six potential candidates, who individual members are encouraging and helping along the way to Master Mason. If all are successful and all join Tunis Temple, we would expect that Tunis Temple, and not the Ottawa Shrine Club would lay claim to such candidate activity. Inventory The Club also puts a great deal of effort into
supporting the Temple Car Draw. This of course is not unique to our Club,
but the results we produced this year are indicative of the cooperation of
our members. Each year our allotment of books is 700. This year we
surpassed the 800 book mark with over $12,000.00 turned in. This effort
involved about 32 Nobles, working on average two shifts each at various
Malls across the City and at the Exhibition. |
